UWP wants ‘unbiased, impartial’ Speaker

first_img 493 Views   4 comments Tweet Sharing is caring! Share The political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton has called for an “unbiased, impartial” Speaker of the House of Assembly.Mr Linton, speaking on a UWP radio program on 18 December 2014, said while the ruling Dominica Labour Party government has decided to move on from the 8 December general election, there are a few changes required for them to do so.Mr Linton will be sworn int as Opposition Leader by President Charles Savarin on Tuesday 23 December 2014 at the State House.“They’re moving on with Alix Boyd Knights in the House of Parliament, that’s how they’re moving on”.Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced during the swearing in ceremony of the Cabinet on 13 December 2014 that Alix Boyd Knights, who has been Speaker of the House of Assembly since 2000, would again be the government’s nominee.Mr Linton said the government believes that by nominating Mrs Knights again that “they are hurting the Opposition”.“Alix Boyd cannot hurt the Opposition, she is only hurting the Commonwealth of Dominica and she is preventing the standard of debate from being lifted to a higher level, that’s all she is doing”.“She believes when she goes there and she tries to shut up people and she tries to tell them sit down and so on she’s doing a wonderful,” Mr Linton said.He added that when Mrs Knights is entertaining Labourites “that do not understand what it means to raise the standards of debate, that do not understand what it means to focus on issues”.He said the Opposition will maintain in Parliament the same “clean level of debate” it used during the 2014 election campaign.“So when we come to the Parliament and we bring the same clean level of debate, the same high standard of debate and Alix Boyd Knights fights us down, what does she think she’s going to make us look bad by fighting against the good that we do, by trying to turn us and twist us because she believes she is the only person who understands the rules,” he questioned.Additionally, Mr Linton noted that the UWP “understand the rules as well as anybody else” and he will be spending a lot of time understanding clearly what the rules provide and will be seeking to function within those rules in the Parliament”.“But always understanding we’re not there in Alix Boyd Knights’ drawing room at Trafalgar, we are in the House of Parliament in Dominica and we expect to be treated with respect”.“I am not going to the Parliament because I stormed the gate you know, I’m going there as the representative of the people of Marigot and as leader of the United Workers Party Team Dominica, it falls to me to be the Opposition Leader so to speak and in the Parliament, we’ll demand respect,” Mr Linton said. He therefore called on the government to move on with an unbiased, impartial speaker of the house.“Let’s move on with a speaker who is even handed in managing the debate in the Parliament, let’s move on with a speaker who is not cantankerous, who does not see as her mission the goal and the objective of embarrassing and attempting to belittle members of the Opposition because she’s not helping Dominica when she does that, she’s simply disgracing herself more and more as someone who knows what the job is to be done but will not do it because of her politics,” Mr Linton said.center_img Share Share LocalNews UWP wants ‘unbiased, impartial’ Speaker by: Dominica Vibes News – December 20, 2014last_img read more
