Be ‘Needle Aware’ As You Participate In Spring Clean-Up Activities

first_imgFacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The annual spring cleanup season is in full swing on the Kenai Peninsula. According to participants, the melting snow and ice is exposing items which have been hidden through the winter. Some of those items include discarded needles, and other drug paraphernalia. Senator Peter Micciche: “As you clean up winter trash, please be needle safe and explain to your kids. I hate posting this, but until we get a handle on addiction and put traffickers away for decades, this will be our reality.” Authorities say joggers, dog-walkers and general passerby should be aware especially on local beaches and parks. Residents are reminded that if  you come across drug paraphernalia, do not touch these items due to health risks. If you find any suspicious items in one of the local parks, notify a park attendant immediately or the local Police Department and an officer will respond.center_img Robl advises people to use caution when finding needles because used syringes carry the risk of spreading communicable diseases like hepatitis and HIV: “We would urge that people who find syringes be very careful with them. It is very easy to have an unintended needle stick which could have some serious health consequences.”  Homer Police Chief Mark Robl: “If you’re unsure about how to collect syringes safely and transport them please contact the police station. We would be more than happy to come out and pick them up for you.” last_img read more
