Lee Backs Regular China Trips

first_imgNews News SHARE South Korean President Lee Myung Bak backed the premises behind Kim Jong Il’s trip to China today, stating, “By going often to see and learn, and with Chinese help, these things can bring change.” President Lee, speaking at a meeting of the National Unification Advisory Council at the Blue House, went on, “Many people wonder whether they rely too much on China, but I do not think so.” Noting his conversation with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao last weekend, President Lee said the two leaders agreed on the benefits of meeting regularly with the North Korean leadership to demonstrate the best way forward.“The unification of our country may take decades,” President Lee said, but added that “as we saw in the unification of Germany, we must prepare as if it will come tomorrow.”He continued, “Now, after last year’s Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island incidents, North Korea is at quite a distance. So now they must now come out in a more responsible posture.”“We cannot know if we will find ourselves in a conflict, but since we are one people, there will always be an opportunity to get on good terms again at some point,” he said. “We believe that the two Koreas can engage in conversation in the name of the future and of development.”“North Korea must increase its economic self-reliance in such a way that its people can enjoy the basic rights that every human should have.
